This is only the internet part of my lecture.. I will make no efforts to keep this page updated. The Internet is in constant flux. Links that this document refers to might have moved, changed or vanished. Still I hope that you will find it useful. Please feel free to comment by e-mail to rgi@fek.su.se
Jag beklagar att dokumentationen är svengelsk. Men tiden är knapp. Jag gör hellre något snabbt, än ingeting långsamt.
This documentation only summarizes the main points put forward in my presentation. I am currently working on a full academic paper that will provide more detail. Please check my research site for announcement and availability.
This time we had time for a few questions.
How safe it is to use credit cards on the Internet? Well, probably as safe as anywhere else. The problem in Sweden as I see it, is that the banks don´t allow Swedish reatilers to use credit card payments. The result is lost business and lag in the learning curve on how E-commerce is. See also: Is it Safe?
How does artificial market actors in the form of mail filters work? That´s a long story. Further down in this documentation you´ll find a start.

I opened with a presentation about myself and my research project.
Everything is about people, then comes technology and money.
The presenter:

This section serves mainly as an introduction to some commercial activities on the WWW.
Two authors from Ernst&Yong consulting wrote the "book" Blur. They argue that we must focus the blur casued by Speed, Connectivity and Interconnection. At www.blursight.com the concept is developed through customer conversation.
e-Commerce is the latest buzzword in the business lounge(s). Predictions vary between 4 and 10 billion USD for the business to consumer markets, and 2 to 150 (sic!) billion USD for the business to business markets at the year 2000.
My prediction today is that e-Commerce will be filled with artificial markets actors. As Nicholas Negroponte said:
most people have a hard time understanding
that the viewership of broadcast will be largely machines in the future,
not people
One option for companies is to open their own shop in the net. These are open 24 hours a day, all year around. Some commonly referred to shopping sites are:
As an example of online shopping I can tell you about when I purchased the "Hunchback of Notre Dame". I wanted to see this Disney movie, because some scenes were produced with synthetic agents. The movie is not released on VHS in Sweden yet, so I had to find it elsewhere. First I surfed to Disnes´s site. They had information about the movie, but no clips from it. Then I tried to purchase the cassette at their Shopping site. But delivery time to Sweden was far too long for me to get it before this conference, which was 7 days away. So I tried some europeean Disney sites, but they only promoted other movies. Finally I went to The Electronic Connection (now closed) and ordered it there. They had it on stock, and shipped it the same night. I used FedEx tracking service to follow my package. And if the tracking page is still on the net, you can see that the movie arrived about 4 hours before I had to leave for the presentation..
Se Netcenter News, September 1998: Should you worry about buying online?
The idea of online spaces has during the last 10-20 years developed in the online services. They used to build on proprietary technology only. But now they have merged into internet.
In order of magnitude, they largest ones are:
March 1997 I sent an e-mail to Pumatechm, an American producer of Personal Information Management (PIM) software. I asked if they carried any product that would integrate my computer with my Pilot, a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). At first they did not reply, but in April the following message showed up in my in-basket:

Yes, we have to learn
No, not everyting
Old, is also valid (as the way Goman treats their customers)
The ideas presented at the lecture, and here, have been developed from the article: Interactive Media face Artificial Consumers, and marketing theory must re-think.
Cepro AB has published the excellent report, Hype without response 481 Swedish organizations ability to engage in individualized web-based customer initiated communication. Although the release information is in swedish, the full report is available in english as a .pfd file. I can also recommend a look at Organizing the Virtual Community by Andreas Oscarsson and David Sandgren (masters thesis from Stockholm School of Economics) info, .pdf file.
The examples I used was MySki, Melnet, FedEx and Posten Företagspaket. The last two manages their customer conversation differently, as these two mails show:

| Dear Mr. Richard Gatarski, Thank you for your internet message. According to our records we are missing some scans on shipments who were delivered on 060396. These missing scans are due to a system failure. Currently our engineers are working to fix this problem and all data are downloaded again into our computer system. I hope this failure will not affect your presentation on your interactive services. Please do not hesitate to write us again if you need any further information. Thanks for choosing FedEx. Hej!

Imagine Artificial Market Actors in
e-Commerce
Today I demonstrade the following (non-linked are not available on the net:
See also BotSpot at http://www.botspot.com
One person in the audience asked about how e-mail advertising is recieved in the US. This is a big question and there exist no general answer. The number of such automated messages, sometimes called junk mail, is growing in volume. Of course e-mail with a commercial message and maybe links to an Internet site are sometimes well recieved. But when and how is probably a complex matter, in the same way as when any traditional vehicle (DM) is used
The result has been in-mail baskets that overflow. By now you might have guessed that the obvious fix to this problem is artificial actors. Today the majority of mail management software includes more ore less advanced mail filters.
For more information, links to filters, applications and other Artificial Mail Managers, see Cnet´s Can anyone stop spam?
