Sundsvall, town, eastern Sweden, in Västernorrland
County, on an arm of the Gulf of Bothnia, near the mouth of the
Ljungan River. It is a seaport and an industrial center. Major
manufactures include cellulose, aluminum, and metal products.
The settlement, chartered in 1621, grew during the late 19th century
as the hub of a large lumbering industry. In 1888 a fire destroyed
much of the town center, which was rebuilt during the 1890s. Population
(1985 estimate) 93,181.
